The fact of the matter is, the big box stores have the almighty advertising dollar. Local businesses just do not have thousands of dollars to plaster advertising in the paper, radio, TV, and billboards. Hardware stores sell nuts and bolts for the same price as the big box stores. Shoe stores sell shoes for the same price as the big box stores. The same goes for just about every consumer need out there. In fact, most shops will match or beat competitors prices...yes, just like the big stores do. It's all about the money in advertising. A thriving, local economy depends on its own population to shop locally, with loyalty, whenever possible. Spending money with local business keeps that money circulating in the community, and that is what can help a community in these hard times.
